His scientific career and achievements are summarized in this essay. Most of his research he performed in the Bavarian Agriculture–Botanical Institute (later named the “Bavarian Institute of Plant Growth and Plant Protection”) in Munich, where he was the director from 1902 to 1923.

The rhizosphere is the zone of soil surrounding a plant root where the biology and chemistry of the soil are influenced by the root. This zone is about 1 mm wide, but has no distinct edge. Rather, it is an area of intense biological and chemical activity influenced by compounds exuded by the root, and by We collected rhizosphere soil, defined as the soil directly adhering to the root system, once the loose soil was gently shaken away from the plant. Rhizosphere soil was immediately frozen at −20°C before it was transferred to −80°C within 8 h for DNA analysis. In this review, we summarize recent progress made in unraveling the interactions between plants and rhizosphere microbes through plant root exudates, focusing on how root exudate compounds mediate Rhizosphere microbiome mediates systemic root metabolite exudation by root-to-root signaling.

Rhizosphere of invasive plants had different impacts on the biomass/abundances of soil biota compared with litter of invasive plants (Table 2, Fig. 1). Unlike positive effects of invasive plant litter on bacterial biomass, living roots of invasive plants reduced the biomass of bacteria in the rhizosphere (log response ratio = −0.13, 95% CI = (−0.28, 0.02)) (Fig. 1 ). The rhizosphere fungal community affects the ability of crops to acquire nutrients and their susceptibility to pathogen invasion. However, the effects of rice domestication on the diversity and interactions of rhizosphere fungal community still remain largely unknown. Here, internal transcribed spacer amplicon sequencing was used to systematically analyze the structure of rhizosphere fungal
Rhizosphere microbiome mediates systemic root metabolite exudation by root-to-root signaling. Microbial communities associated with roots confer specific functions to their hosts, thereby modulating plant growth, health, and productivity.
