THE GREAT GATSBY AND THE LOST GENERATION

When Gatsby responds that Daisy’s voice “is full of money,” Nick suddenly understands the source of its dangerous mystique. Daisy’s voice echoes with affluence. Its “inexhaustible charm” makes exciting promises, but as Nick learns, such promises cannot be kept. Gatsby is portrayed to be distressed as his presentation is shown to look as “pale as death”. The term “plunged” emphasises on the nervousness of which Gatsby feels in Daisy’s presence. Gatsby is shown to have been “glaring tragically”, highlighting the importance of this meeting, of which the reader has been anticipating.

In chapter 4, the reader sees a drunken Daisy crying because she was reading an old love letter from Gatsby. This is in sharp contrast to the image we get of Gatsby himself at the end of the Chapter, reaching actively across the bay to Daisy's house (1.152). While Daisy views Gatsby as a memory, Daisy is Gatsby's past, present, and future. It's clear even in Chapter 1 that Gatsby's love for Daisy is much more intense than her love for him. When Nick invites Daisy and Gatsby to tea at his house, the clock is a focal point during the interaction. Because Gatsby and Daisy had not seen each other for five years, the clock symbolizes the passage of time.
